Our role

Technical Partner — Knowledge Graphs & Semantics

We built the EO4EU knowledge graph and semantic annotation layer that semantically relates Earth Observation datasets, services and descriptions, so users can discover and query the resources they need. We also led the multi-stakeholder requirements analysis and the project's data management plans.

Impact and outcomes

  • DataOps ecosystem delivered, connecting fragmented Earth Observation data sources into one accessible platform
  • Semantic knowledge graph deployed to improve the FAIRness and discoverability of Earth Observation data
  • Machine-learning pipeline delivered for dynamic annotation of Earth Observation data
  • EO4EU validated in pilot use cases from personalised health care to crisis management

The challenge

EU services offer vast amounts of Earth Observation data, but access has rarely extended beyond experts and scientists. The data is fragmented, complex and hard to find, retrieve and process, so turning it into analytics takes specialist skills. As a result, much high-value environmental information remains unexploited.

Our approach

EO4EU built a DataOps ecosystem that connects major EU data sources such as Copernicus, DestinE and GEOSS. It combines machine-learning semantic annotation, knowledge graphs, data fusion and augmented and virtual reality interfaces, and was demonstrated in pilots covering health, shipping, ocean monitoring, food security, soil erosion, pests and crisis management. Our knowledge graph structures the data so it can be discovered, related and explained.
