Our role

Technical Partner — Sustainable Digital Finance

We led the design of business models and payment schemes for landscape services built on distributed ledger technology, rewarding the communities, institutions and artists behind sustainable landscape practices. We co-designed and tested these digital finance tools with stakeholders in every pilot.

Impact and outcomes

  • Landscape Services and Scenarios developed and tested in three heritage-landscape pilots
  • Hybrid prototypes delivered, combining creative landscape practices with digital tools
  • Distributed-ledger business models and payment schemes delivered for sustainable landscape services
  • Architects, designers and artists engaged with local communities through the Creative Dialogue calls

The challenge

Heritage landscapes long reflected a sustainable relationship between people and their environment, but short-sighted contemporary practices are eroding their value. This reveals a lost capacity to conceive and implement practices that produce sustainable landscapes. The loss is sharpest where landscapes face air pollution, water stress or new energy infrastructure.

Our approach

PALIMPSEST brought architects, designers and artists together with local institutions and communities through "Creative Dialogues" to imagine new landscape scenarios and services. It worked in three pilots: Łódź's industrial heritage and air quality, the irrigated farmland on Milan's fringes, and Jerez de la Frontera's wine landscape. We made these landscape services financially sustainable through distributed-ledger business models and payment schemes.
